Delta Wings Duck Club, Arkansas, USA

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The De Valls Bluff in the Arkansas Prairie is famous for its forested wetlands and river delta. Home to a diverse array of waterfowl and wildlife, the region attracts thousands of mallard ducks, seasonal hunters, and outdoor leisure enthusiasts who arrive from late January to early February to participate in the annual waterfowl hunting spectacle.

Delta Wings Duck Club offers guided hunts and adventure outings for members and guests to enjoy the fauna and flora of the natural surroundings, as well as the season’s sport.

The exclusive outdoors retreat upgraded its clubhouse facilities for added comfort and improved social cohesion after a day’s exciting adventures, as well as to enhance the aesthetics of its natural forest and wetland setting.

A comprehensive makeover of the deck and firepit was required to provide a space that combined functionality, comfort, and a touch of luxury while maintaining the venue’s rustic charm.

FLOCKING TO THE DECK

Chuck Harper, a consultant sub-contractor of Evolution Builders was tasked with transforming the clubhouse’s exterior into a safe, social, and sustainable outdoor entertainment area.

Not only would the facility serve as a post-hunt gathering point for a constant trail of hunters, dogs, ducks and dirt, but also as an expansive entertainment venue for guests and members to enjoy the scenery.

Aside from blending in beautifully with the forest outlook, the deck also needed to be durable and able to withstand the extreme temperature fluctuations typical of Arkansas’s wildlife delta.

Constant expansion and contraction from heat and cold can cause cracks, warping and splintering in traditional wooden decks, decreasing their lifespan and overall appearance. In addition, wet, damp or debris such as leaves, or organic material can often produce problems of rot, mold or insect infestations.

Cold, wet, marshy conditions during duck hunting season contrast with hot, humid summers alongside the forest with increased risk of wildfires, demanded a weatherresistant, fire-resistant deck.

NO ‘DUCKING AND DIVING’ ON QUALITY – ONLY THE BEST WOULD DO!

Harper’s experience in designing and erecting practical, low-maintenance structures prompted him to propose a durable composite deck and custom composite board drink rail tops with a built-in natural stone firepit for members to congregate and share their stories.

Warm, weather-resistant composite materials in natural, earthy colorways were incorporated to enhance the aesthetics of the region, without adding unnecessary expense of constant maintenance and care.

The expansive deck in Himalayan Cedar colour, provides a spacious, appealing area for members to enjoy the great outdoors. The bordering handrail, in matching colourways, provides safety and security to ensure children and pets don’t fall over the edge. Finally, the built-in stone firepit – made from locally sourced materials – provides a warm and welcoming centerpiece for the facility. This created an appealing area that blended perfectly with the natural surroundings, while ensuring members and guides needn’t worry about safety, maintenance or upkeep.

Harper specifically recommended the reinforced structural strength and aesthetic appeal of Apex Plus from Eva-Last, given the extended span – and unique performance demands– of the clubhouse’s climate and forest-facing deck.

Apex Plus’s advanced bamboo-PVC compound with acrylic cap, provides all the natural good-looks of wood without the worries of degradation or damage from debris, insects or exposure to the elements. Made from renewable bamboo fibres mixed with recycled plastic, and glass-fibre reinforcement, Apex Plus takes sustainability and low-maintenance convenience to new dimensions.

The deck’s gorgeous ‘Himalayan Cedar’ appearance is created through advanced dual-tone colour technology which recreates the tones and textural variations of timber without chopping down any trees. Its embossed structure provides a slip resistant surface that also boasts a WUI fire rating – ideal for heavily forested areas such as Delta Wings’ Duck Club.

The added length of each board allows for a clean, seamless surface with fewer joins and sub-structural supports thanks to Apex Plus’s glass-fibre reinforced (GFR) core. Each deck board contains a reinforcing layer made from glass-fibre added to the bamboo foamed-PVC extrusion. This enhances the dimensional strength and stability necessary for the deck’s extended span. The durable boards experience less expansion and contraction, which is critical given the region’s seasonal temperature fluctuations. This ensures the deck won’t degrade over time due to warping, cracks or splintering from the constant heating and cooling process. A protective acrylic capping prevents fading, sun-damage, scratches or stains, as well as degradation or damage from damp, debris or insect infestations.

Delta Wing Duck Club’s new entertainment deck and firepit is the epitome of style and comfort in the great outdoors.
