The Journey

Forged from the same bold spirit that drove history’s pioneers, Pioneer composite has been created to challenge perceptions, push boundaries, and create something that redefines composite. As aged and exotic hardwoods become harder to source, and as forests become increasingly monitored and regulated, a composite which perfectly replicates the look of these prized timbers becomes the smarter, more convenient, and more sustainable way forward.

Pioneer composite captures the richness of authentic regional and exotic woods using scans of the real timber, delivering a finish so convincing that even seasoned contractors and industry experts, need a closer look. The timber detail is extraordinary, offering an indistinguishable look of hardwood, but in a long lasting, low maintenance composite material.

The process of creating and perfecting this innovative composite has been years of meticulous care in the making.

Here’s how we’ve made it happen.

1. Selecting timber types

1. Selecting timber types

Mother Earth offers an extraordinary spectrum of timber species and Pioneer is committed to honoring them through a durable, reliable composite. In consultation with leading timber experts and distributors from across the globe, we examined regional decking preferences and compared hues, grains, and distinctive characteristics continent by continent. This global exploration allowed us to curate a selection of exceptional wood species which now forms the foundation of our Pioneer color collection.

2. Sourcing the best timber samples

2. Sourcing the best timber samples

With the selected wood species finalised, we began sourcing premium timber planks to scan for our groundbreaking composite range. With some of these timbers being hard to come by, especially in longer lengths, this was a time-consuming and cumbersome process. Once received, each plank was carefully inspected by experts to identify the most beautiful colours and grain patterns. Samples were sorted into two groups, Perfect and Imperfect, and only flawless pieces moved forward. From these, the best “face” of each plank was selected and marked, forming the ideal pallet lot of reference boards for every timber type.

3. Preparing boards for scanning

3. Preparing boards for scanning

The selected hardwood timbers required meticulous care to preserve their integrity. Shipped from around the world, each board was carefully packaged to protect it from UV, salt, and moisture ingress, and transported on the most efficient shipping lines. Upon arrival at the Eva-Last scanning facility, every plank was re-inspected and prepared for its intended finish - some were oiled for the Pioneer “oiled” tones, while others remained untreated to achieve the “natural” colour options.

4. Revolutionising composite through scanning

4. Revolutionising composite through scanning

Each selected timber plank was scanned in high-resolution to capture every subtle detail and faithfully replicate its natural nuances. The scans were then printed to film, colour-corrected, and verified against the original boards before moving into full-length composite production. What many believed impossible became reality: a library of exceptionally accurate scans which power the Pioneer range’s remarkably realistic colour range, including the Indigenous collection where you can achieve a full pallet without a single repeated grain pattern.

5. Bringing Pioneer to market; an inspiring response

5. Bringing Pioneer to market; an inspiring response

Pioneer’s reception from the market has been exciting, immediate, and nothing short of inspiring. Timber and composite professionals, distributors, dealers, contractors, and architects have been blown away by the remarkable result and creation of Pioneer. We at Eva-Last have always been “pioneers” in composite decking technologies. Now, our flagship Pioneer range lets us celebrate what happens when tenacity meets creativity, and when we respect our forests enough to seek new ways of preserving them. Pioneer immortalises the rarest, and most sort after regional timber species through a new progressive form of composite decking.

Issues plaguing hardwood decking

Sourcing quality hardwood decking is becoming increasingly difficult. Premium and exotic species face declining availability due to forest management restrictions, resource depletion, and tighter regulations. Global supply chains are unstable, with strikes, export limits, and mill closures driving up prices and creating unpredictable costs.

Stricter sustainability standards, certification requirements, and illegal logging concerns add further complexity. To avoid these issues, many specifiers are turning to composites and modified woods, which offer the same aesthetic with lower risk and maintenance. Of these composites, one brand is emerging as the frontrunner for its realistic look and relaible performance: Pioneer. Read More
